Sand Valley has become one of the premier golf destinations in the country, and it doesn’t take long to understand why. Four eighteen hole courses, a world class short course, and a property that seems to keep growing every year have turned a quiet stretch of central Wisconsin into a pilgrimage for golfers.
Like most great golf destinations these days, getting there takes some planning. Sand Valley offers some incredible on property lodging, but it can be difficult to get. By the time our number came up, we were too far down the waiting list to make the cut. It’s safe to say the secret is out.
But that didn’t keep us from making the trip. We booked a house about five minutes down the road and secured tee times more than a year in advance for Sand Valley, Mammoth Dunes, and Sedge Valley. The Lido was the only course that has a prerequisite of staying on property, but I’ll definitely be back for that one.
The Lodging
Sand Valley is located in the fairly remote town of Nekoosa, Wisconsin. It’s quiet during the day. Pitch black at night. Perfect for a golf trip where quality times with your friends is as important as the golf.
Our rental backed up to Lake Arrowhead Golf Course, which gave us the perfect place for a little twilight wedge practice and some night putting after dinner. Those are the little moments that end up sticking with you. The golf is why you book the trip. Everything around it is what makes you want to come back.
The Amenities
By the time the first morning arrived, we were like kids on Christmas. We pulled into the property more than an hour before our 9:00 tee time simply because none of us wanted to waste a minute.
The first thing that hits you isn’t the clubhouse. It’s the property itself. Rolling sand hills, endless fescue, and massive putting greens stretch out in every direction. It feels less like arriving at a golf course and more like arriving at a golf destination.
We hit a few balls and rolled a few putts, but I spent most of the time just taking it all in. Before the round I wandered over to Craig’s Porch, a small snack shack next to the putting green. Three dollar breakfast sandwiches in 2026 feel like they belong in a museum. I grabbed one, settled into an Adirondack chair, and soaked in the view before it was finally time to tee it up.
The Golf
Over the next three days, we played Sand Valley, Mammoth Dunes, and Sedge Valley. Three courses on the same property, yet each one had its own personality.
Sand Valley ended up being my favorite. It’s open enough off the tee to tempt you into getting aggressive, but every lapse in concentration seems to end with another visit to one of the property’s endless bunkers. If you get lulled to sleep, you’ll spend so much time in the sand you might cancel your Labor Day beach plans.
Mammoth Dunes is pure fun. The greens are so massive they make the ones at Sand Valley look average. They collect golf balls instead of rejecting them, which can do wonders for your greens in regulation statistics. Then you stand over a seventy five foot birdie putt and realize that three putting might actually be a pretty good result.
Sedge Valley was our final stop, and it didn’t disappoint either. At a par 68, it might be your best chance to break 80…or 90…or 100. It leans heavily on par threes, but every hole asks a different question. Between the elevation changes and constant club selection decisions, you’ll hit just about every shot in your bag. It also has some of the best turn food on the property. One dollar hand pies and beef sandwiches are exactly what you want before heading back out for the closing stretch.
The Experience
What impressed me most was how different each course felt. They don’t blur together the way some multi-course resorts can. Each has its own strategy, its own personality, and its own reason to come back. That’s harder to pull off than it sounds.
Three days later, we loaded the clubs back into the car and headed out, already talking about the next trip. Sand Valley isn’t just a collection of great golf courses. It’s a destination that knows exactly what kind of experience it’s trying to create, and it delivers. Whether you stay on property or five minutes down the road like we did, it’s absolutely worth building a golf trip around.
